Happy Birthday to Us!
On Feb 25, the Haldimand County Pulse turns one. Twelve months ago, we hit send on our very first issue and crossed our fingers that at least a few neighbours would open it. Maybe my mom. Maybe one optimistic friend.
Instead, something wild happened.
In one year, we’ve sent 101 editions, delivered more than 750,000 emails, hosted 40 giveaways, and shared hundreds upon hundreds of events, fundraisers, business openings, award nights, arena schedules, spaghetti dinners, blood drives, and “you should really check this out” moments. We have officially lost count. Not because we don’t care. Because math stopped cooperating sometime around edition 63.
It Started With an Idea
The idea was simple. Put everything happening in Haldimand County in one place. Make it easy to read. Make it local. Make it free.
No paywall. No corporate voice. No big city filler. Just Caledonia, Dunnville, Hagersville, Cayuga, Selkirk, Fisherville, Jarvis, and everywhere in between, showing up on a screen near you.
We knew there were great things happening across the county every single week. Service clubs grinding away behind the scenes. Small businesses taking risks. Volunteers giving up evenings and weekends. We just wanted to shine a brighter light on it.
Turns out, you wanted that too.
The Numbers Are Nice. The Impact Is Better.
Sure, 750,000 emails delivered sounds impressive. So does 101 editions. So do 39 giveaways.
But the real wins look different.
A bar that had to turn people away because too many showed up to their event after we shared it.
A local fundraiser that hit its goal faster than expected.
A small business that saw a spike in customers after a single mention.
Messages that say, “I had no idea this was happening until I read the Pulse.”
That is the good stuff.
This Only Works Because You Show Up
You subscribe.
You forward it to a friend.
You tag a neighbour.
You submit your events.
You tell us when we missed something.
You show up to the trivia night you almost skipped. You buy the ticket to the dinner. You roll up your sleeve at the blood drive. You choose the local shop instead of clicking “add to cart” somewhere else.
And to the businesses who advertise with us, thank you. You believed in this early. You decided that supporting a hyperlocal platform was worth it. You kept this thing free and accessible. You are a huge part of why this works.
When we say community supported, we mean it.
Year Two Is Going to Be Fun
We are not done. Not even close.
Year two already looks busy in the best way. More events. More features. More spotlights. More ways to connect people with what is happening around them. More ways to help local businesses get seen.
The mission has not changed. Keep it local. Keep it useful. Keep it honest. Keep it fun.
If the first year was about proving this could work, the second year is about building on it.
We are proud of what the Haldimand County Pulse has become in just twelve months. But we are even more excited about what it is becoming next.
So here’s to one year of emails, events, and accidental math. And here’s to many more.
Thanks for reading. Thanks for showing up.
