When most people think of the Haldimand County Public Library, books usually come to mind first. Fair. But the library has quietly expanded into something much more interesting with its Library of Things, and a lot of residents still have no idea what they are missing.
The Haldimand County Library is no longer just a place to borrow reading material. It is also a place to borrow tools, equipment, games, and experiences that can save you money and help you try something new without committing to buying it.
What Is the Library of Things?
The Library of Things is a growing collection of non-traditional items available to borrow with your library card. These are practical, fun, and sometimes surprisingly useful items you might only need once in a while.
Think of it as borrowing curiosity without adding clutter to your house.
Some Standout Items You Can Borrow
One of the most popular categories is outdoor recreation. You can borrow disc golf discs to try the sport before buying your own, or reserve park passes that get you free entry to Ontario Parks and Grand River Conservation Authority parks.
For creative types, the library offers videography equipment like tripods, ring lights, and green screens. There is also a VHS digitization kit so you can finally convert those old family tapes before the VCR gives up for good.
Gardeners will appreciate the Seed Library, which lets you take seeds to grow at home and contribute seeds back at the end of the season. There are also puzzles and board games available, perfect for winter weekends or family nights.
And it’s not just a couple dusty games, either. The Haldimand County Public Library has a board game collection with over 200 titles you can borrow, which is basically a free trial of every game night idea you’ve ever had. Grab a family favourite, try something new, and return it when you’re done instead of storing it forever.
The Haldimand County Public Library also provides autism sensory kits for in-library use to support a comfortable and welcoming environment for everyone.
Where You Can Access These Items
The Library of Things is part of the wider Haldimand County Public Library system and serves multiple local branches, including Caledonia, Cayuga, Dunnville, Jarvis, and Selkirk.
The Haldimand County Public Library Dunnville Branch is a popular pickup location for many of these items. The Hagersville branch is temporarily closed while it moves into the new Hagersville Library and Active Living Centre at 1 Athens Street. A grand opening date will be announced soon.
Items can be searched online and placed on hold for pickup at your preferred branch.
Why More People Should Be Using It
The Library of Things is ideal if you like trying new hobbies but do not want to spend money on equipment you may only use once. It is also great for families, students, creators, and anyone who appreciates practical solutions that do not involve online shopping.
It is one of those services that feels obvious once you know about it, and surprising that you did not hear about sooner.
If you already have a library card, you are ready to go. If you do not, this might be the best reason yet to get one.
The Haldimand County Public Library is doing more than lending books. It is quietly lending possibilities.
